Cookin’ on the Coast 2024 – Episode 05:
Sheringham Seaside Gin w/Vietnamese Style Turkey Meatballs
In episode #5 of Cookin’ on the Coast, Shanyn Ward from Liquor Plus introduces Sheringham Seaside Gin, featured in a refreshing gin & tonic. This gin is described as capturing the essence of Vancouver Island’s west coast, with its aromatic blend of wild roses, ocean air, and coastal forests. Sheringham Seaside Gin is made from an intriguing mix of botanicals, including juniper, lavender, rose, citrus, coriander, and local winged kelp, which gives it a subtle oceanic flavour. Its complexity and balance make it a perfect choice for sipping neat or mixing into cocktails.
The story behind Sheringham Distillery is rooted in Vancouver Island’s history and environment. Jason and Alayne MacIsaac, inspired by their surroundings and each other, started their distillery in the small town of Shirley, B.C., which was originally named Sheringham. Their goal was to create spirits that embody a deep connection to the region and its rich culinary traditions. They began distilling in their home garage, gradually building what has become a celebrated local brand.
Sheringham’s iconic glass bottles are a nod to local history, with designs inspired by prohibition-era moonshine bottles that Jason discovered near the site of an old distillery. The embossed sailboat on each bottle represents the “Favorite,” a historic schooner that once sailed the Salish Sea. Despite the distillery’s growth, Sheringham remains firmly connected to its West Coast roots, offering spirits that reflect the beauty and spirit of the region.
The Seaside gin & tonic, showcased by Shanyn, is a perfect match for Chef Heidi’s Vietnamese-style turkey meatballs, enhancing the dish with floral notes of rose, lavender, and coriander.

Chef Heidi’s Vietnamese-style turkey meatballs offer a bold and savoury flavour profile. The fish sauce and cayenne deliver a salty umami punch with a touch of heat, while the fresh lemongrass and cilantro stems add a fragrant, citrusy brightness. Brown sugar balances the savoury elements with a hint of sweetness, and green onion offers a mild, fresh crunch. Together, these ingredients create a well-rounded, aromatic dish that’s rich, zesty, and mildly spicy. High protein, high flavour, and quick to put together, it’s a perfect mid-week meal!
While many wines could pair well with the dish, a gin & tonic brings an extra layer of elegance, with floral and complex notes that enhance the spices in the meatballs.
Together with Shanyn Ward, Chef Heidi highlights how Sheringham Seaside Gin perfectly complements the dish, while also exploring the unique botanicals and offerings from Sheringham Distillery.
