Negroni Sbagliato: The Happy Accident
If you’ve ever completely messed up a drink at home, don’t throw it out just yet – it might actually turn into a global sensation.
To celebrate International Negroni Week this September (Sept. 21-27, 2026), we’re shining a spotlight on the Negroni Sbagliato (pronounced spAHg-lee-AH-toh). Translated from Italian, sbagliato means “bungled” or “mistaken.” As cocktail legend has it, celebrated bartender Mirko Stochetto accidentally grabbed a bottle of Prosecco instead of gin while mixing a classic Negroni at Milan’s iconic Bar Basso back in the late 1960s. Rather than starting over, he served it—and created one of the most refreshing, bubbly aperitivos in history.
Think of it as the ultimate Negroni spritz. By swapping out high-proof gin for crisp sparkling wine, you get all the complex, bittersweet depth of Campari and sweet vermouth, harmonized by effervescent bubbles. It’s lighter, lower in alcohol, and effortless to sip as the summer heat transitions into crisp autumn evenings.
Whether you fell in love with it after its viral TikTok moment or you’re trying it for the first time, this happy accident is the perfect drink to stir up this month.

Ingredients:
- 1 oz Campari
- 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
- 2 oz Chilled Prosecco (or your favorite dry sparkling wine)
- Garnish: A fresh orange wheel or twist
*Pro Tip: Keep your Prosecco in the fridge until the absolute last second; colder bubbles keep your drink fizzy much longer and stop the ice from melting too fast!
Instructions:
-
Prepare the glass:
Fill a rocks glass (or a wine glass if you want an extra spritzy feel) with plenty of fresh, clear ice. -
Give it a chill:
Pour in the Campari and sweet vermouth. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 10–15 seconds to chill the spirits and kickstart the dilution. - Bring the fizz:
Top off the glass with your chilled Prosecco. -
The Finishing Touch:
Give the drink one slow, gentle lift with your bar spoon from the bottom of the glass to combine the layers without losing any effervescence. Garnish with an orange wheel, sit back, and enjoy!
